With the current frigid temperatures in the U.S., many moms might be wondering if it’s safe for their kids to play outside? And if so, for how long? This wind chill chart from the National Weather Service just might answer those questions since it gives us a way to estimate how long it will be before wind chill sets in.
For instance, right now in Atlanta it’s 18 degrees and the wind speed is 5 mph so there is no danger of frostbite. Of course, the chart above is only a rule of thumb, but it’s still a useful tool. So use it to reassure yourself if your babies are outside.
On the other hand, I lived in Canada (Ottawa) when I was a kid and there was snow on the grounds for months and temps were habitually below zero. Nobody knew about “wind chill” and we played outside for hours and nobody thought anything of it.
