Long, long ago in a galaxy far away, getting old meant you dragged out the rocking chair and spent the rest of your life watching TV and the world go by. My parents and their friends got virtually no exercise except for a bit of housework and perhaps cutting the grass (before the days of riding lawnmowers, of course.) But the baby boomers generation knows better and we realize that the number of birthday cakes we’ve had doesn’t mean that we should stop moving and ignore nutrition.
Been a a gym or exercise center recently? If so, you will have noticed that everyone in there isn’t 18. Exercise and physical activity have fans of all ages and you might even find 80 year olds working out. After all, the baby boomers generation flooded gyms back in the 1970s and many have carried those habits into the 21st century.

Senior yoga is certainly NOT the only way for baby boomers to exercise, but it’s increasing popular – and why not? Yoga looks a lot easier than it is – a real yoga workout is quite strenuous – but it has a number of advantages for anybody and becoming a member of the yoga generation is smart at any age.
Our breathing will deepen automatically and deep breathing removes toxins and invigorates the entire system …
Yoga stretches out our entire body, making us more limber, less stressed and eliminating tightness and strain …
Yoga is low impact and won’t harm joints the way pounding the pavement does …s …
We are definitely more relaxed if we do yoga on a regular basisis …
Yoga calms the entire system, reducing mental and physical stress …
When we are less stressed, our blood pressure will automatically lower, without the need for drugs …
Our hearts will be healthier and stronger since they will work more efficiently and will be more relaxed …
Our lung capacity will improve, reducing the chances of any lung disease …
Our stamina will increase, as will our bodily strength – even more so than in an aerobics class …
The possibility of osteoporosis is reduced since our spines will definitely be healthier …
Our inner organs and digestive system will be stimulated to more efficiency …
Headaches are likely to be less frequent and melt away much more quickly – if they appear at all …
And my favorite benefit: increased inner serenity for all the reasons given above …

Generally, I’m the Queen of the do-it-yourself club. I don’t like going to ‘experts’ to learn anything! But in this case, a teacher and class can be very helpful. There are a lot of subtleties to yoga that a competent teacher can show us. Having said that, using a book or yoga tape is surely way ahead of nothing. There are also sites on the Net that can be of great assistance.
The verdict is clear: the baby boomer generation – and indeed, every age – is greatly benefited by yoga. Exercise & physical activity aren’t the property of any group and senior yoga is wonderful for any age. If you have any doubts, try yoga for yourself. Give it a one month try and see how you feel. You will be a convert!
