The Protein Power diet is written by Drs. Mary Dan and Michael Eades. Many believe it is one of the best low carb diets and if you’re interested in low carb dieting you might want to check out their diet.
The Dangers Of A Low Carb Weight Loss Diet
The low carb weight loss diet has become extremely popular in the last 20 years of so – but are they healthy?
ANY diet that ignores or omits and entire category of food is ultimately flawed.
There are three basic food types:
Protein …
Carbohydrates …
Fats …
The human body is clearly created to need all of these and be wary of those that don’t include all three.
In addition, too much protein can result in a condition called “ketosis”. I’ve experienced this and the symptoms are dreadful: I was lightheaded, dizzy, nauseated and I couldn’t stand. My husband contacted our doctor who recommended some particular foods and stated that if I wasn’t improved in one hour that I should come to the hospital emergency room. Not a pleasant experience as you might imagine. So the notion of a healthy low carb diet is an oxymoron to me. It would be to you, too, if you had experienced my ketosis episode.
The Protein Power Plan
The original Atkins diet allowed zero carbs, although it has since grown more tolerant. The Protein Power lifeplan is a bit less restrictive than Atkins but it’s still very low in carbohydrate – too low for health, in my opinion.
Phase 1: the dieter is allowed 30 grams or less per day.
Phase 2: that number is raised to 55 grams.
After you exit phase 2, the amount of carbs is based on your lean body mass.
The emphasis in these low carb, low calorie diet menus is a bit different from many other such diets because the emphasis is on making sure you get “enough” protein (according to the Eades standards), rather than counting carbs to make certain that you avoid them. Thus, their focus is quite different from say, Atkins.
There are methods in the book for figuring out your lean body mass and the percentage of fat on your body so that you know how much protein to eat.
The Drs. Eades low carb diet menus have included charts to make your menu and meal planning easier. Their lists include protein counts to ensure that dieters get enough protein and also list carb counts to make your limitations easier (if there’s ever an ‘easy’ way to deprive yourself. :-)
Supposedly there is a plan for vegetarians and other low carb diets claim that they also make allowances for vegetarians like me – but I don’t see it. A fruit or vegetable is, by definition, a carb. How can we eat veggies and avoid carbs? However, I have zero interest in a low carb diet so it wouldn’t be fair of me to say that it’s impossible.
If you join the Eades program, you will have access to a message board/forum, which is always helpful.
Is The Protein Power Diet Right For You?
This low carb weight loss diet is great for meat lovers! If you’re one of those, you might like the Protein Power lifeplan. You will, most likely, lose weight – at least, at first. But the Eades caution that this isn’t ‘just’ a weight loss diet but should be considered a lifestyle plan. In other words, if you follow their dictates you will eat this way for the rest of your life. One fan said, “Fortunately it’s a healthy plan.” Sorry – don’t agree with that at all. Excessive meat isn’t a good idea. Regardless, though, I think very few people have the self discipline to eat this way for a lifetime … which is a very good thing.
