Are milk and weight loss truly kissing cousins? Recent claims by the dairy industry would make it appear so. Headlines loudly proclaim "Milk: The Weight Loss Miracle Drink" and stars posing for ads with a milk moustache include Glenn Close, Mariska Hargitay and Sheryl Crow. The most recent campaign includes a fabulous picture of Brooke Shields, dressed all in black, implying that her incredibly thin body is a result of consuming dairy products.
The evidence suggests otherwise. The prestigious scientific journal, Nutrition Reviews, evaluated 49 studies of the weight-milk connection. Their conclusions:
* Two studies showed dairy consumption was linked with weight gain
* 41 studies = no effect on weight from drinking milk
* The other six showed a correlation between dairy weight and loss … but they were funded by the dairy industry.
Beyond the question of weight loss is the deeper issue of whether milk and dairy products are healthy for the human body. Here are some sobering facts about America’s love affair with milk.
The idyllic picture of a contented cow grazing in the pasture is rare today. Instead they are fed grains, primarily soy beans, so that they produce about three times as much milk as cows once did. This means that cows are unhealthy and can’t survive without antibiotics. These antibiotics, naturally, are in their milk and a steady diet or antibiotics does nothing for our health or weight.
The plastic container of milk that you pick up at the grocery has been boiled at a temperature of 160 centigrade and then cooled. This destroys all the enzymes in milk, the enzymes needed for digestion. Guess where the undigested food and drink is stored? As fat on your body.
Dairy products all contain lactose, which is a concentrated sugar. Sugar + weight problems … Need we say more?
All that lactose sugar is a delicious buffet to all microforms, mycotoxins, parasites and other undesirables that live in our guts, prevent us from proper digestion and steal the vitamins and minerals that we’re ingesting.
Milk – all animal products – are highly acidic. This makes our blood and lymph acidic, too, and the way the body protects its organs from this acid-bath is by coating them with fat as a protective measure. In fact, Dr. Robert Young says that our fat is literally saving our lives! The answer, clearly, is to remove the toxins from our bodies so that our body will reduce the fat.
This problem is compounded when we eat dairy products, as opposed to ‘just’ drinking milk, because it takes 10 pounds of milk to make one pound of hard cheese, 12 pounds of milk to make one pound of ice cream and 21 pounds of milk to make one pound of butter. If milk is acidic, imagine the effect of these concentrated acids!
Milk contains pus and blood from cows. Enough said on this gross subject.
The Dairy Association recommendations are 24:24, meaning three glasses, or 24 ounces of milk every day. That’s 300 calories that could be "spent" in other ways.
The notion that milk is good for weight loss is nothing more than propaganda. Cow’s milk is only good for baby cows. It won’t help you lose weight and it is definitely not good for the human body.
