People spend a lot of time of their feet during their lifetime. Wearing the right shoe is very important in avoiding foot problems and conditions. Here are several ways to maintain a healthy foot.
1. Wear the proper shoes for your feet
Wear the appropriate shoe size. Many people are surprised to learn that their feet are two different sizes. One’s shoe size can change during adulthood or after pregnancy. In some cases, one foot can be quite larger than the other. It is important to measure your feet periodically in adulthood to ensure that you always have the accurate size. If the two feet are two different sizes, one can buy the larger pair of shoes and add an insert to the larger one to create a better fit.
2. Match shoe to activity
Select the right shoe for the right activity. Whenever participating in sports, the shoes should be athletics shoes. If one is running, the shoes worn should be designed specifically for running. According to Dr. Ian Russell, shoes that aren’t matched to the right activity can cause foot conditions like plantar fasciitis over time. Tendinitis, heel spurs and troubled arches are additional health conditions that can occur. Some people may find that wearing custom orthotics is ideal.
3. Cut toe nails properly
Cutting toenails properly prevents a foot infection of some sort from occurring. When cutting the toenail, the cut should be made straight across. The nails should never be cut too close to the skin. Round corners on the toenails or cutting the nails too close to the skin can lead to ingrown toenails.
4. Alternate between heels and flats
Wearing heels is double-edged sword. Women feel confident wearing them but they must be worn in moderation to prevent foot problems. Experts recommend alternating between heels and flats. Additionally, women should always consider wearing flats during their commute to work and then putting on heels when at their location. Wearing heels to often can affect the muscles in the legs and make it hard to switch between heels and flats.
5. Purchase breathable shoes
Footwear should be breathable. Keeping feet dry prevents nail fungus and athlete’s foot. People who are prone to sweaty foot should be extra careful to select shoes that are breathable. Those who are active can look for shoes with extremely breathable mesh, which offers increased ventilation in extreme temperatures.
If you are wearing the right shoes for your feet, you will encounter fewer health problems and foot injuries. Consider looking for shoes for each occasion to make sure your feet have adequate support throughout the day. If you have experienced foot problems, consider scheduling a visit with a podiatrist.
