Our guest author today writes about five healthy foods for feeding our families. I'm a vegetarian so I can't comment on ostrich meat but the others are great and I highly recommend them.
Keeping yourself and your family healthy and fed is a full time job all on its own. There is a massive trend towards organic, healthy living, but it all seems a little bit daunting, and introducing massive changes to the menu is not going to go down great at feeding time. So where to begin? Here is a list of five everyday items that absolutely must be in your fridge. Starting small will help your family to adjust, and you can gradually up the ante when it comes to healthier food choices.
Lemon is a wonderful and versatile fruit that can be used for its juice or the zesty, flavourful skin. The health benefits of citrus fruits are well noted, but the reason that it should be in your fridge is that it increases your basal metabolic rate. Essentially, it makes your body burn energy (and fat) more efficiently. It also adds depth to the food that you prepare. Splash some lemon juice onto salads or fish, and add a splash to a glass of water to reap instant health benefits.
Although this fantastic meat is quite hard to come by, it is becoming increasingly popular. Ostrich is great because it is lean protein – a must in any diet. Your family will love it because it’s still red meat, it’s full of flavour, and kids will think it’s exciting. A great tasting, easy to cook option.
Fat Free Milk
Slowly move away from full cream milk, down to 2%, and finally to fat free. Served ice cold this is a great alternative to sugary drinks that will boost calcium intake without the excess fat.
This wonder food may be a little tricky to introduce to fussy youngsters, but it is an absolute must when in season. Avocado is rich in essential fatty oils that are great for your brain and heart. If you are not a fan, incorporate avocado into other foods – it’s great on pizza and sandwiches, or as a dip. If the taste is an issue, add some lemon juice and black paper – the exciting combination will win over the most stubborn of protestors.
Our body is made up of 70% water, and maintaining these levels is crucial for a healthy lifestyle. If you can encourage your family to exercise, then ice water is a great reward after a gruelling session. Also, water will help cleanse the digestive system, and keep you feeling light and healthy.
