Quite simply: Scott’s Turf Builder Grass Seed is a total winner! For years we have had a substantial part of our lawn covered with bark chips. Of course they decay and we tired of constantly replacing them so decided to change those large areas to grassy lawn. The problem, of course, was that we now had large areas of bare ground. After much research, we chose the Scott’s product mentioned in this review.
Why We Chose Bermuda Grass
Honestly, Bermuda is not my favorite grass based on appearance. But it has a lot of benefits for the Atlanta, Georgia area;
#1: Bermuda loves hot weather which is perfect for the city nicknamed Hotlanta
#2: Bermuda is drought-resistant
#3: Bermuda is “self-repairing”, meaning it will fill in open areas or damages spots – and quickly
#4: It is a fast growing grass
#5: It has runners so it moves into other areas without having to wait for seeds to propagate
Why We Are Thrilled With Scott’s Turf Builder Grass Seed
Simply opening the bag was a treat. I love, LOVE birds – but I admit they’re not always so wonderful when putting down fresh grass seeds. I have used other seeds in the past and was inundated with large flocks of birds all enjoying the new buffet in my yard. I’m not angry about this. After all, birds go where the food is. But it IS discouraging to have large amounts of your seeds devoured before they have a chance to germinate.
Also, some seed have coatings that are definitely bad for the birds. But they don’t know that and eat the seeds anyway, so they may become sick or even die. I don’t want to massacre birds.
The Scott seeds, though, were ignored by my feathered buddies. For one thing, they are a funny turquoise color and they’re very tiny. They don’t even look like seeds.
The turquoise color made it easy to see where the seeds were so I went back and more heavily seeded the really bare areas.
And, of course, the real reason for my enthusiasm: the seeds worked beautifully! In less than four weeks almost every bare spot on our lawn was almost totally filled in!!! It is simply amazing how quickly we had new areas of tough, hardy grass. There is actually only one mostly-bare spot on our lawn and it’s tiny compared to the size it once was.
Enough of this review – I’m off to Home Depot to buy more seeds to fill in our last spot. We are sold on Scott’s.
