Four Benefits of Frankincense Oil

Written by Margaret Acklin 2 Comments

Frankincense is mentioned in the Bible as a gift given to the baby Jesus by the three Wise Men. Obviously, it is an old and highly-valued oil and our guest author today mentions four powerful benefits.

Frankincense oil is extracted from the resin of frankincense trees. The bark of the tree is pierced, causing the resin to leak out and solidify into small, hard pellets—usually called pearls or tears. The resin is then steam-distilled into a pure essential oil that has numerous uses and benefits.

Frankincense oil has a distinctive balsamic, sweet smell. It is most widely used for its cleansing, soothing attributes, and has a wide variety of uses. It should only be used according to directions. Here are the four main benefits that frankincense essential oil has to offer.

Emotional Support

When used for aromatherapy, frankincense may relieve stress, clear minds and lift emotions. It can provide emotional strength and support, and has even been shown to relieve depression. When used for aromatherapy, it may help produce a sense of calm and centeredness.

Similarly, frankincense has long been implemented in spiritually practices. It can aid in entering a meditative state, and many who use it in this way report an increase in insight and mental clarity.

Topical Healing

Frankincense is also known to have many dermal benefits. Frankincense oil’s antiseptic properties make it excellent for use in treating cuts, wounds, or skin blemishes. This prevents infection and promotes faster healing. New mothers will be happy to know that it’s great for treating diaper rash. The anti-inflammatory properties of frankincense make it helpful in relieving muscle and arthritic pain, and swelling.

Frankincense, as an astringent, strengthens and tightens skin and the underlying tissue. As such, it can help reduce the appearance of scars, pockmarks, and wrinkles. It rejuvenates the skin by lifting tissue and tightens pores to restore a youthful glow.

Digestive Aid

In a pure oil form, frankincense can be safely ingested—always according to directions, of course. It is a known carminative, meaning it suppresses the production of gases that can get built up in the intestines, hindering digestion and causing discomfort. It can also be used to aid in indigestion or heartburn, and may even boost metabolic processes.

Respiratory Health

Frankincense oil can aid in a number of respiratory ailments, including coughs, common colds, bronchitis and laryngitis. It suppresses coughing and can help loosen buildups of mucus. It aids the body’s efforts to fight internal infection, as it supports the immune system and its functions.

So, there you have it! Essential oils have been around for quite a while, and offer a number of benefits. What’s your favorite essential oil? Share your comments here!
