Supposedly, a great treatment for those zits and pimples is honey. But not just any old honey – manuka honey is the powerhouse.
If you don’t know the difference between orange blossom honey (for example) and manuka honey, don’t worry – I didn’t either. But apparently manuka honey only comes from the manuka bushes of New Zealand. Other honey may – or may not – be quite valuable, but the manuka honey is often referred to as one of the famous ‘superfoods’.
Why Is Manuka Honey Considered A Superfood?
Here are a few of its benefits:
* Antibacterial
* Antiviral
* Anti-fungal
* Anti-inflammatory
* Antioxidant
* Antiseptic
* Repairs wounds
Notice the wound-repairing quality. Isn’t that what a pimple is? This golden stuff is excellent at repairing any skin problem because it resists the so-called superbugs, or bacteria, that are an unintended consequence of antibiotics.
Don’t Be Lured Into Fake Manuka Honey
There is an independent agency in New Zealand that tests and certifies REAL manuka honey. I’m sure there are a lot of bogus claims, as there always are when a ‘superfood’ appears on the scene. This organization is the Unique Manuka Factor Honey Association (UMFHA). Thus far it has certified 29 different companies as producing the genuine honey.
I checked about a dozen of the companies on Amazon and didn’t find them. Let’s be clear: the honeys available here in the US may be genuine, but ask some questions first. And, it’s very possible that other kinds of honey may help to heal skin problems. The only way to find out for sure, of course, is to experiment. One thing is for sure: honey isn’t high-risk like drugs. So let us know if you decide to use honey on your pimples and let us know how it turned out. I have neither zits nor manuka honey in my cabinets so I can’t test it out.
