Daily Mile [http://dailymile.com] is a fitness tracker but it’s very different from Daily Burn which we recently reviewed. Yes, it’s a spot to keep an online training log but it’s much more of a social networking site than is Daily Burn. When we’re exercising we can sometimes be isolated. Our family, co-workers and friends may have zero interest in our sport and so we have no one with whom to share our triumphs and questions. Daily Mile helps to fill that void. So if you need other athletes to schmooze with, here’s one possibility. Here’s how to use this popular fitness tracker.
Step 1: Set Up Your Account With The Big Orange ‘Get Started’ Button
Obviously, you simply need to simply follow their directions, as you’ve doubtless done many times. Be sure to include a picture of yourself if the social aspects are important to you. We ALWAYS feel better about people when we can get an idea of what they look like – well, maybe not the Hunchback of notre Dame or Dracula. :-)
One welcome option is that you can link your Daily Mile account to your Facebook and Twitter accounts if you have them. That way you already have some friends from your first minutes on site.
OK, now that we have set up our account, what comes next?
Step 2: Pick Your Activities and Reveal All
It’s simple to get started on your chosen sport/activity because there is a built-in sports menu under the “Add Workout” heading.
After you’ve chosen – let’s say you want to run, as in the picture below – you can start adding details from another drop down menu:
As shown above, you can keep track of where you ran, distance, time, how you felt (don’t you love the last little face above?) and how it went.
But suppose you met Tom Cruise, witnessed a Mafia murder on were almost abducted by aliens on your run? You can record that in the " How did it go?" and then add ‘More Detail’ so that you never forget!
Click “Share” to create a record that will last until you delete it.
Step 3: Choose and View Feeds
Daily Mile includes feeds as part of their options. If you have a Facebook account (and who doesn’t?) you are undoubtedly familiar with feeds and most likely have some favorites.
And if socializing is one of your goals, you will want to subscribe to the feeds of fellow-enthusiasts, especially those who are pursuing the same sports that you’re interested in.
If you have no particular choices, you might want to read the most popular feeds on this fitness tracker. This is one sure way to make friends and even find like-minded soul mates.
Step 4: Make Friends By Commenting on Their Posts, Feeds and Comments
Commenting is a great way to make friends, both online and perhaps even in person, assuming you live in the same area. If you want to make a comment, don’t be shy. Just click the "+Comment" button and chat away.
And what if you want to make friends with someone on the site? All that’s necessary is to click on their name and then the “Add Friend” link.
Most users will welcome new friends – and if they don’t, be sure not to take it personally. Many folks are afraid to reach out to others but, if that’s you, just take a chance and do it anyway. Even if they’re not interested, don’t take it personally. After all, they don’t even know you.
Step 5: Track Your Workout Progress
Let’s remember that these are fitness trackers, not just a place to socialize, the digital version of the office water cooler. You absolutely do want to keep records of your workouts so simply choose “Training”.
This is a central place to keep up with all you’re doing to be more physically fit and reach your fitness goals, whatever they are. We’ve already discussed options like workout duration, distance, how much you enjoy your activities (or not), calories burned, etc. Rather than relying on memory you will be able to see trends over time thus gaining valuable feedback that will help you to continually improve.
Here you’ll see a detailed history of everything you’re tracking. By default, it’ll track your workout time, distance traveled, enjoyment of your workout and workout pace. You can add stats like calories and heart rate by customizing your shares.
"Are There Any Mobile Phone Options?"
Although there isn’t an app, you can definitely use Daily Mile features on your iPhone or Android phone. Simply log in on DailyMile.com and you’ll discover that they have a fully featured mobile version on their site.
Daily Mile is a powerful fitness tracker if you’re searching for three things: 1) friends to share your athletic activities with 2) a place to reinforce motivation and 3) a spot to track all your training.
