Subway is the latest fast food chain to join Chick-Fil-A, Subway, McDonald’s, Chipotle and Panera in eliminating chicken raised with antibiotics. The only one of these chains that I visit is (occasionally) Chick-Fil-A and they announced their decision in February of 2014. Not only is this a great health and consumer decision, but these giants also put chicken producers under pressure to raise birds in healthier conditions.
Of course, much more than this needs to be done to treat chickens humanely. If you want to see just how horrible conditions are, take a look at this page: http://www.all-creatures.org/anex/chicken.html
I live in North Georgia where chicken production is a big industry and many times I’ve seen trucks loaded with chickens heading toward a slaughterhouse. The poor birds are crowded in so tightly they can’t move and all of them look sick, stuffed into cages covered with excrement and who-knows-what. Only a serial killer or psychopath could be unmoved by a close look at their plight.
Still, let’s applaud the restaurants mentioned above. Every little step is important.
