Based on all the anti-depressants taken today you might think that this particular emotional illness is running rampant. It is. If you take a survey of your friends, you would find that more than one, perhaps yourself, is on meds. You might think others need to be. Your question may be, "Can depression be cured?"
Fixing the Neurotransmitters
Whether or not depression can be cured depends upon its cause. For instance, if the cause is bio-chemical as in the brain isn't producing the neurotransmitters needed, maybe not. The pharmaceutical industry would have you believe you need to take their products forever. However, there are others such as Dr. Richard Wurtman of MIT who is studying how particular nutrients in foods can assist in making neurotransmitters. For instance, protein assists in alertness, carbohydrates in relaxation and folic acid (dark leafy greens) to elevate your mood.
Healing Grief Issues
Any loss in life is accompanied by grief. This means all forms of abuse, losing those you love by death, moving or divorce, loss of job and any other loss involves grieving for you to get back to your stable happy self. If given medication to hide the feelings, the feelings remain in the body to fester. When you do grief work the feelings begin to pour out. As you sort through the deep sadness, it leaves and you feel better. All you need is someone to help you. This could be through a grief book, support groups or a mental health practitioner.
Control Your Thoughts
Some people find themselves into a dark hole. They imagine the worst things that could possible happen to them. If their stomach hurts they think cancer. If they fall in love they fear it won't last. Some people say that 98% of the things you are worried about happening never happen. The pessimist will say, "There's that 2% that's left." Learn how to control your thoughts. Substitute positive ones for those down in the dumps one. If you're always imagining the worst, you are going to feel depressed.
Learn to Laugh
Feel good chemicals are released by your body when you have a hearty laugh. Learn to do more laughing especially at yourself. You can choose to laugh over the spilt milk rather than become upset and morose. Get funny movies or old radio shows that give you a good belly laugh.
Meditation
Research has demonstrated that mediation can lift depression as well as prevent a reoccurrence. Meditation can be religious or non-religious in nature. The positive effects upon your body are similar. When you meditate you are bringing your heart and brain in synch. Your immune system is strengthened and you become more peaceful.
