Cellulite Cures: Why “Losing Weight’ Might Not Get Rid Of Hateful Cellulite

Written by Sydney Johnston 1 Comment

Cellulite cures are a subject of intense interest in our society because we all know people like Bruce – or we ARE Bruce – who was 40 pounds overweight on the day of his 65th birthday. Bruce hated the appearance of his body, covered with the dimpled fat called "cellulite" and desperately sought a method for removing cellulite. Alarmed, too, about his health, he began a rigid diet and lost his excess weight.

But the darned cellulite was still there!

Even worse, his vitality, energy and enthusiasm vanished along with the excess poundage. He looked gaunt and was always exhausted while his family and friends worried about his decline.

Three years later, Bruce had regained his 40 pounds … and added an extra 25. Sadly, it’s an all-too-familiar story today.

Then, Bruce became a participant in a local fitness program. After several months of moderate eating discipline and regular exercise, much of the weight was off and Bruce ‘s confidence that the rest would go returned. And best of all, this time he felt great and his appearance showed off his new-found energy and enthusiam for life.

And his dimpled fat – the villain cellulite? Mostly gone and fading fast.

A Cure For Cellulite?

Why was Bruce’s experience so different the first and second time?

The first time Bruce lost WEIGHT …

The second time Bruce lost FAT …

This isn’t just semantics- it’s critical! When most people "diet" they concentrate on’losing weight’ and in the process lose muscle or active tissue. Active tissue/muscle uses many, many more calories just to sustain itself than fat does.

When we exercise we increase "lean body mass" and get rid of pounds of fat.

Eliminate Cellulite By First Understanding It

Most of us misunderstand what cellulite really is and believe that only fat people have cellulite.

THIS ISN’T TRUE!

Cellulite is often compared to the skin of an orange, with its craters reminiscent of the moon. Actually, cellulite is a chain of wrinkled “fat cells” and “subcutaneous connective tissues” beneath the layer of the skin. But what isn’t generally known is that folks who are not fat at all may have cellulite.

Researchers aren’t actually sure why some of us have a tendency to pile on cellulite – while others don’t. The causes might be due to hormones or tiny differences in cell structure. Lots of doctors and research labs have their own theories, but actually the cellulite sufferer doesn’t really care. We just want to be rid of it!

One thing is certain though and that’s that women are much more prone to cellulite than men are. Studies indicate that the connective tissues of the female body are firmer than those of men. So fat and cellulite are partners because when the fat piles on, the fatty cells will get bigger and retain more moisture, thus giving the dreaded orange peel look a helpful hand.

Removing Cellulite By Shedding Fat, Not Muscle

Most of us believe that this equation works:

Get rid of fat === > Get rid of cellulite

Ain’t necessarily so!

Yes, it is true that too much fat strains the skin cells by pushing on them and giving the dimpled appearance that is considered disgusting in our culture.

But formation of cellulite depends to a great deal on the cell structure of each one of us. If you or I have cells that don’t have a tendency to bulge or expand- even if fat deposits accumulate – then we won’t have cellulite no matter how much we weigh.

So, here’s what we need to do to either get rid of the cellulite we already have or to avoid ever getting any in the first place:

Keep our connective tissues – the tissue that connects our cells – strong and powerful, and
Avoid fat so that it doesn’t develop and push on our cell walls and connective tissue

Getting Rid Of Cellulite

The #1 way to get rid of cellulite – or prevent it in the first place – is through exercise.

Let’s face it – none of us have any problems transforming food into fat! We might hate this, but it’s the way we’ve survived since we lived in caves. With an uncertain food supply, those ancestors who were most efficient at storing fat were the ones who survived. Thus, we’re all descended from efficient-food-storers. That might seem like a ripoff today – but if it hadn’t been that way, we wouldn’t be here.

Losing fat isn’t easy. In fact, here are our three alternatives:

Less food + activity stays the same

Same amount of food + more activity

Less food + more activity

Well-meaning writers, in an attempt to get us couch potatoes to exercise more, will often earnestly assure us that an hour of vigorous exercise will burn 300-600 calories.

Every time we read something like that we think, "Are you kidding me? One Starbucks latte will ‘cost’ that many calories – and more. So I have to go out and run an hour just for a latte? What’s the point? I might as well stay fat!"

But the value of exercise goes far beyond that! Forget for a moment the increased energy and zest for life and concentrate on the effect exercise has on cellulite … with exercise, our connective tissues remain strong and are much less likely to dimple up!

In addition, of course, we are much less likely to have fat on our bodies since muscle is much more metabolically active than fat, burning many more calories even when sleeping.

Weights & Exercise Eliminated Bruce’s Cellulite

Bruce is trim and vigorous today and he accomplished this goal with moderate exercise and moderate eating control. Remember what we’ve learned from Bruce’s experience:

With dieting only: Bruce lost connective tissue – but his fat cells were alive and healthy. This absolutely didn’t solve the cellulite problem at all.

With exercise: Bruce strengthened his connective tissue & lost fat. Cellulite doesn’t have a chance when this occurs!

So if you hate your dimpled fat, here is "How To Reduce Cellulite 101": get some exercise, exercise, exercise! You can find out for yourself if this is true – no need to take anyone’s word for it. Exercise for cellulite elimination and feel great. It’s a pretty darn good deal.
