It’s a misnomer to talk about the Jennifer Hudson weight loss diet – if you’re thinking of a new diet created by American Idol star Jennifer Hudson. Yes, Hudson lost weight and looks terrific but she used two already-existing programs: weight watchers and the exercise portion of the Five Factor Diet.
How Much Weight Did Jennifer Hudson Lose?
According to what she reported on Oprah, Hudson lost about 80 pounds in less than a year. She reports dropping from a size 16 to a size 4-6 which is truly amazing and inspiring.
Most of us are somewhat familiar with Weight Watchers since it has been around for decades. It works on a points system and has been quite effective for hundreds of thousands of dieters. I, myself, lost weight with it about 20 years ago, although I question some of its nutritional principles, now that I’m much more informed about nutrition and health. At any rate, Jennifer Hudson & Weight Watchers have been a successful match.
The Five Factor Diet
The Five Factor diet is the creation of Harley Pasternak who claims that stars like Jessica Simpson and Kanye West have successfully used his diet. Jennifer Hudson didn’t follow his eating plan, preferring Weight Watchers, but it is worth noting that other dieters like the plan. It have "fives" everywhere: five major food groups of only five ingredients that take five minutes to prepare. The food groups are the standards that we are all familiar with:
Complex carbs …
Protein …
Fiber …
Water …
Fats …
As with many diets these days, there is a "cheat day" that allows any food you want. Burger, fries and a shake? Go for it – although I suspect that using discretion will be wiser. After all, we don’t want to "undo" everything we’ve just accomplished.
The Jennifer Hudson weight loss in 2010 did use the Five Factor diet exercise plan which includes 5, five minute workouts, five days per week.
Like most exercise programs, Five Factor exercises begin with five minutes of cardio like walking in place, climbing stairs, jogging in place, doing jumping jacks or using some type of cardio machine set on its lowest level …
Next, five minutes of upper body exercises using weights and/or an exercise bar – for instance, Dumbbell Bicep Curls or Dumbbell Lateral Raises …
Third is five minutes of lower body exercise like squats …
Fourth, five minutes of ab or "core" crunches and twists …
Lastly, is five minutes of cool down which is supposed to help the exerciser avoid, or at least lessen, Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) …
Two good points about these exercises: they’re not complicated and confusing and they require very little equipment. A set of weights is sufficient.
Since she is a celebrity, Jennifer Hudson received personal attention from Harley Pasternak, who advised her to utilize every possibility for movement. For instance, if you’re talking on the phone, walk while chatting. I can see this because we could easily walk up and down our driveways while conversing with friends or folks from the office.
Our opinion: this is a sane and sensible way to lose weight and be healthy. There is nothing faddish here and the goal is to lose weight over time instead of these ridiculous claims about "losing 10 pounds in a weekend". In the end, any weight loss program will work only if we’re comfortable with it and are willing to make lifestyle changes. The Jennifer Hudson weight loss method worked for her and can work for any of us if we’re willing to commit. That’s truly the question, isn’t it – commitment?
