For many people, it might seem as though modern musical and digital technology does not compare well with the ancient Indian spiritual practice of meditation. However, they couldn’t be more wrong, as more and more people are beginning to make good use of meditative music to help them on their journey towards inner peace and tranquility. Indeed, music has been connected with meditation for thousands of years – in ancient India, the bamboo flute and wooden mrdangam drum were often used in combination during meditation sessions, and many great sages and yogis spoke of the benefits of relaxing music and soundscapes (such as the running sound of a river, or the wind blowing through the trees) as helping them reach a state of inner bliss. As such, music and meditation have always come together, and listening to music during meditation sessions can help with all sorts of aspects of relaxation and detachment.
Many people find one of the most difficult things to overcome when attempting to meditate is the constant distractions which exist both within us and physically around us. Often, when we sit down and start our breathing exercises, we get to a certain level of relaxation when suddenly the telephone rings, or a car horn sounds outside. Often we are at a certain point in the meditative process when an unwelcome thought or worry pops into our head unexpectedly, completely throwing us off the track. Meditative music has other properties, also. It surrounds us in a cocoon of soothing soundscapes, and blocks the outside world. This sensory enveloping, which occurs especially when listening through a good pair of headphones, can lead the way to some vivid visualizations – particularly with meditative music which mimics natural sounds or contains subliminal messages with which to coax us into a particular dreamscape.
Perhaps the sound of gentle waves lapping on a shoreline will help you drift on an imaginary ocean, or the sound of a light breeze will transport you to a cool, grassy meadow. Modern meditative music can really do wonders for your relaxation and meditative exercises – no wonder so many people are turning to it to help them get started with meditation!
Quite simply, for beginners especially, meditative music is an enormous help. It can take months or even years of practice to achieve a level of meditative expertise to be able to easily drift into a state of relaxed detachment without assistance. With meditative music, you can very quickly block out all distractions, allow your senses to be occupied with only soothing sounds, and be given a helping hand when it comes to your visualizations. Before long, you’ll be in a deep state of relaxation and meditation, and you may well remain in this blissful condition long after the track you are listening to has ended.
