There are classically three great times of the day for visualization: morning (dawn is best), at sunset and at bedtime. If you can’t manage all three of these times, at least do as much as you can.

The practice itself is simple: spend a few short minutes seeing yourself and your body exactly the way you want to look. Perhaps you can see yourself wearing slinky jeans or a tight fitting top? Or perhaps you feel yourself moving easily, not weighed down with extra flab? Or perhaps you hear the murmurs of awe from friends and colleagues?
Some folks have a tough time visualizing. If that’s you, look for a picture that looks like you want to be and practice "being" that body. One caveat, though: the models in fashion magazines truly are starved, emaciated women. The average woman will fortunately never look like that so don’t set yourself up for failure by expecting to be a five foot, eight inch, 100 pound model. It’s unhealthy anyway.

Another technique is to visualize yourself from inside your body. For instance, you might be inside your rather plump tummy and see the fat slowing dissolving, melting away. Many who have used this technique begin at either their head or their feet and move through the entire body. Personally, I have problems visualizing in this way so prefer to focus on various ‘sections’ of my body. The point is to do what works for YOU.

Throughout your day, imagine yourself looking great and wearing the slinky jeans you’ve already pictured. It helps to choose one affirmation that summarizes your goal and repeat it again and again and again. Some sources recommend multiple affirmations but I personally think this complicates the process. If we get too complex, chances are we will lose our focus and quit.

Have fun! Why must weight loss be painful? It’s only misery if we think it is! Think of yourself as slim, glowing and healthy and rejoice in that notion. How can that possibly be an uncomfortable, undesirable experience?
If you’re expecting to lose weight quickly with this technique you will most likely be disappointed. But if you want a permanent solution, then using visualization will make the entire process of "how to lose weight" much more pleasant, enjoyable – and effective.
