If you’re an American, you know the Star Spangled Banner, our national anthem. I knew a bit about the song: the name of the author, Francis Scott Key, and that it was about the British shelling of a patriot fort. But I knew nothing like what’s in this amazing video.
The video shows the merciless shelling that went on all night, whose sole goal was to knock down the flag. Yet, after shelling the fort – aiming especially at the flag – the Brits were astounded to discover in the morning that the flag was still standing, although definitely tattered and damaged. The reason WHY this happened will make any patriot become impressed or even teary.
The video isn’t without its flaws: some of the printed words on the screen are incorrect and the voice singing the song at the end isn’t the greatest. Still, it’s much better than most of us can do. When we get to, “the rocket’s red glare” and our voices must rise, it’s a tough song to sing. Still, my American pride runs rampant at the hardship and courage of our ancestors. It doesn’t seem like Americans today are anywhere near this courageous. Hope I’m wrong.
