Today's guest author writes about a common problem for most cooks: the same meal again and again. Especially if the cook (usually mom) works, and thus time is short, it's just more efficient to fix a meal we're familiar with. What's fascinating about this article, to me, is the '9 top meals' because there are items on the list that would never make it onto a US list. But one dish we all have in common: pizza.
Do you feel like you’re cooking the same meals again and again? If so you’re not the only one. A recent survey by Merchant Gourmet found that the vast majority of families have just nine recipes in circulation, cooking them over and over again.
It may be a surprising statistic at first glance but after thinking about it, it is reasonable one. Life is manic for so many these days and time is at a premium with most families just not having enough time to learn and master a new dish.
If being time-poor wasn’t enough, the Merchant Gourmet also found the cook of the house often has to cook more than one meal to cater for different tastes and fussy eaters which only adds to the pressure.
Merchant Gourmet stated: “A massive 81 percent of respondents claimed they have to make two or more meals every night and 23 percent said they would stick to the same meals because their children are fussy eaters.”
These are remarkable statistics to say the least. I understand that for many cooking is a chore but with figures like that even the foodies out there must be getting sloppy.
Top nine meals relied upon by Mums/Dads were reported as:
1. Spaghetti Bolognese
2. Roast dinner
3. Shepherd’s Pie/Cottage Pie
4. Pasta dish
5. Meat and two veg
6. Pizza
7. Casserole/stew
8. Sausages and chips/mash
9. Indian/Curry
Do the 9 meals sound familiar? If they do, don't freak out. Firstly, take comfort that you’re with the majority of families. Secondly it’s not that hard to improve your repertoire. Aiming for just one new recipe a month is not only manageable but will keep things interesting. If you stick to it just think, by the end of the year your repertoire will be 21.
