I don't know about you, but no matter how thin I am, my stomach isn't truly flat. At least, it never looks like the guys and gals on TV. I'd settle for looking great in jeans, meaning my tummy doesn't pooch out. I eat right and exercise – I walk, I lift weights and I do yoga. So I've decided to search for a killer abs workout and see if that will make a difference. The most famous one is The Truth About Abs by Mike Geary.
If you're like me – and if you're reading this, you probably are – taking weight loss pills or starving ourselves doesn't result in flatter abs. Even exercises like mine won't do the trick. We need abdominals exercise. And I don't know about you, but doing situps just doesn't cut it. Or, at least, if hasn't for me.
Of course, there are a million, zillion programs out there so how do we know which one will work? Experimentation! And I'm starting with this one and will update this post.
If we don't deal with this problem area, we will keep our flabby abs and there are lots of health reasons, besides vanity reasons, to get rid of that flabby pouch. So Mike Geary suggests that we try something new.
You've probably heard the definition of insanity: "Doing the same thing and expecting different results"? If you've tried in the past to have a great looking abdomen and failed, isn't it time to do something different? Isn't it time to open our minds and accept some new ideas?
10 Reasons To Like The Truth About Abs
Mike rightly focuses on nutrition rather than starvation. He points out that if we don't eat correctly we might end up with super strong ab muscles – that are buried under layers of flab! This situation makes any abdominals workout quite pointless. It's easy to fall into dietary slumps and it is even easier to lull yourself into believing you are on a good, effective diet when in fact your weight-loss and muscle-toning are going nowhere at all.
Another reason to focus on nutrition is that it will boost our metabolism so that not only will the weight come off faster, it will stay off and we won't regain it – at least, not as easily. The Truth About Abs includes all any of us need to know about delicious and healthy meals that will lead to the abdomen we crave.
Mike says that we don't need to spend much time on six pack abs exercise! Forget the crunches, situps and other torture. In fact, we need almost NO abdominal work out (yee-ha!) because we can't really focus on just one part of our bodies.
We need whole body exercise because we need to burn fat from our entire body. We either burn fat all over our bodies – or we don't. Imagine a gross, obese body with rock hard abs. Pretty ridiculous image, isn't it?
Geary gives us a huge supply of these workouts. Not only are the directions very detailed, but he also includes photos with each one so we will know exactly what to do.
I have never liked fast-moving exercise that has me covered with sweat and panting for air. On the other hand, I truly enjoy weight bearing and strength exercises. There's something very zen about focusing on a muscle group as I slowly lift a weight or raise a bar. I've known for years that building our muscles is the best way to lose weight and Mike confirms this. Lean muscles requires a lot more calories than fat and raises our metabolism.
Further, using weights – or, in my case, a weight machine – fights aging. With strong muscles, so many of the ailments that are supposed to be 'natural' or 'inevitable' with aging simply don't materialize.
Additionally, Geary provides sets of exercises for persons of all experience and fitness levels. He claims that his beginner set of exercises will work for you no matter who you are. You could be a teenager who is just beginning a fitness routine for the first time; or you could be a grandmother who is interested in getting back into shape. Indeed, even if you are under 15, he provides a wealth of body-weight exercises, so that you do not need to use weights.
We don't need one of those expensive machines. With The Truth About Abs we get the knowledge that will remain throughout our lives. We won't have to rely on a machine that may not work. I know first hand about these … years ago there was an ab machine promoted by Suzanne Summers. I bought the thing and used it faithfully. But after a few weeks, instead of a flat ab I had back aches that I had never had before. It took me a bit to realize it was the darned machine. Great! It cost too much, it took up a lot of room – and it gave me a backache. Let me add that I'm not at all claiming that every ab machine is like that. Some of them may work very well. But I prefer to have the knowledge myself and not rely on a machine.
If you have you knowledge, it's portable. Going out of town? No problem. You can still continue with your program. No need to haul a heavy machine with you (even if you could do something so foolish).
As soon as you arrive at The Truth About Abs site you will need to choose a program for either men or women, and I really like that. There's no doubt that there are some differences about the way we metabolize food and our muscular structure is different so different programs are a bonus.
The level of support is high. He has a newsletter with 700,000+ subscribers and when I emailed a couple of questions, they were answered thoroughly and promptly.
A pretty good indication that a program is not a scam can be found when the promoter offers to return your money with no questions asked. Finding an unconditional money back guarantee is a good sign that the program is legitimate – and The Truth About Abs offers one. And make no mistake: if I follow this program and it doesn't work, I definitely WILL take advantage of the refund!

There is an old abs workout I like. It does not need any equipment, it may be done anywhere, anytime, sitting, standing, or lying in bed and no one will even know you are doing it.
It is called FARMER BURNS.
BlissPlan says
Ohhhhh, Jerry, how cruel to mention “FARMER BURNS” and then not tell us what it is. :-) I looked it up and found the answer, though, and will write a blog post on this method from Martin “Farmer” Burns. Thanks for the mention.
Jerry says
Hi Blissplan –
The Farmer Burns exercise came to my attention through the Matt Furey website. I originally thought Farmer Burns was funny, because one could do an abs burn while having a conversation or sitting in a boring meeting, etc. I do mine in bed when I wake up at night, along with my EMDR exercises. EMDR is quite valuable for reversing the effects of a bad dream, even inducing euphoria “of my own juices”, as the Indians would say.
There is mention of Farmer Burns on YouTube, however I think the version of the exercise I saw there in a YouTube video is not the same as the Furey version.. The YouTube version directs the subject to take a deep breath and then compress the abs. The Matt Furey version instructs the subject to completely expel air from the lungs, and then tighten the abs for a count of 5.
Perhaps you might comment on the risks, if any, of the YouTube version, which is to place a lungful of air under high pressure.
Doesn’t this type of exercise harken back to the old days of “Dynamic Tension” ? (Dynamic tension was a system of exercise in which there was no motion whatsoever, just progressive tensioning of the various muscle groups.) Dynamic tension might be of use to those who are handicapped, or pregnant women.
