It seems that everyone in America is perpetually obsessed with losing weight. People will do almost anything if it means being thinner. Unfortunately, many of the most popular weight loss plans and products are not healthy. They also are not very good for the environment. The corporations that sell weight loss drugs and plans have people believing that there are ways to trick the body into becoming smaller. Some of these drugs really do work for a short time. They jump-start the metabolism and cause the body to burn more fat and calories than it usually would. Once the body adjusts to the chemicals, its metabolism returns to its original state. Programs that instruct people to eat certain foods in certain proportions are largely scams. People who are tired of wasting money and time on ineffective weight loss ventures should try some eco-friendly ways of staying active and healthy.
1) Riding a bike to work
Riding a bike to work reduces car emissions and gets one into the habit of exercising on a regular basis. It is not necessary to bike to work every day. That sort of extreme all-or-nothing thinking turns people off from wanting to exercise at all. It makes them feel like failures if they ever skip biking for just one day. Start by biking to work just one day per week.
2) Growing herbs and vegetables at home
Growing herbs and vegetables at home is a great way to add flavor and variety to one's diet. As with the prior suggestion, extremism is not necessary. Keeping a small herb garden on a window ledge goes a long way toward building new, healthy eating habits.
3) Vegetarian diet
For some people, shifting to a vegetarian diet may aid in losing weight. Scientific research suggests that the hormones in factory-farmed meat may cause the body to generate fat and hold onto calories. One should be careful when making any major lifestyle changes. Not everyone thrives on a meat-free diet. Even reducing meat intake by a small amount can make a big difference to the environment and one's health. One does not have to become a vegan to start drinking soy or almond milk. Almond milk is very low in calories and does not raise the same ethical issues that cows' milk does.
4) Local farmers markets
Local farmers markets specialize in pesticide-free produce. It feels good to purchase food that is removed from the corporate system that utilizes harmful chemicals in its growing processes. Organic foods have not been genetically modified to look better at the expense of flavor. Many people who make the switch to organic foods find that they eat more healthfully after finding out how good fruits and vegetables taste in their natural forms.
5) Participating in local clean-up initiatives
Participating in local clean-up initiatives is good for the body and the environment. Organizations promote beach and park clean-ups during the warmer months.
Losing weight should be seen as one side effect of a shift to a healthier life, not a goal in itself. It will happen naturally as one begins to enjoy eating and exercising rather than seeing those actions as means to an end.
