Did you know that mobile apps can help you get fit? Not only can they get you in better shape, they can help you have fun while you're doing it!
There are a variety of mobile applications for Android, iOS and other platforms that will keep you set on your goals, remind you when it's to take action on those goals, help you eat balanced meals and more.
Mobile Fitness Games Go Social
Fleetly is a health-conscious mobile game for all of your different Apple products that combines several important fitness tasks into a fun and competitive social game.
You can use the app alone if you want to and earn medals when you complete workouts. But you can also use it with friends, whether you're enjoying some friendly competition or just want to encourage each other to get fit.
One of the most important things about Fleetly is that it reminds you to exercise and tracks your progress. It even drops your score when you haven't been working out.
Getting started with Fleetly is easy. Just go to the Fleetly website and sign up. You can even login with your Facebook account if you want (although you don't have to).
Self Magazine's Diet and Fitness Game on Facebook
Self Magazine has created a Facebook diet program and social fitness game that can serve as a "micro-community" where you and your friends–or even people you barely know–can help keep each other motivated.
The game, called Self Workout in the Park, can be accessed on mobile devices by anyone with a mobile Facebook app. The game also has its own application on Facebook.
You can find out more at Self Magazine's Drop 10 Diet Together page.
Reminders Don't Have to Be Annoying
The Healthper application for Android allows you to pick from several different games to help you reach your goals. These games are fun to play and give you reminders of the daily tasks you need to do to stay on track.
While the app does have a social element, it also offers personalized rewards. The concept behind the application is that small changes in a person's day-to-day life can have long-term consequences, both good and bad.
The application also includes social networking so that you and your friends can encourage each other on your way.
Hunt Ghosts and Stay Fit
Games4All's SpecTrek app works with your smartphone or tablet's camera and GPS system to turn any walk, run or jog into a fun ghost-hunting game.
This app works with your GPS to plot out an exercise path for you. Along the way, you'll find ghosts that you can hunt down with your phone–all within a time limit that you determine yourself. This is important, because the app can get pretty addictive–you can spend an unexpected amount of time playing with it.
This is a great Android mobile app for kids and teenagers that need to get more exercise, as well as for adults who have a hard time thinking of exercise as fun. Aside from all that, it can be a really great way to spend an afternoon with small children.
Like any good game, SpecTrek provides those little rewards that keep us reaching for the next achievement: awards, titles, records and statistics. Most importantly, though, it's a fun way to get and stay in shape.
When people think of getting in shape, they generally imagine spending hours toiling on a treadmill or stationary bike, but that's not the only way–or even the best way–to exercise. With all of the personal gadgets at our disposal, we have numerous ways to turn the normally mundane task of getting fit into a fun, rewarding experience that challenges us to improve all aspects of our health and to encourage our friends and family to get in on it, too.
