I was just reading a supposed diet/weight loss article from Woman’s World magazine that recommends vegetarian chili for weight loss. OK, pay attention here because I think this is horrifyingly amazing:
“In pan over medium heat, saute 2 cups chopped onion in 1/2 cup olive oil until onions are translucent.”
Onions Do NOT Need Olive Oil For Sauteeing!
> I just checked my olive oil and it states that there are 120 calories in 1 T (tablespoon) of oil.
> There are 8T in 1/2 cup
> Total calories: 960
On the other hand, I love, worship and adore Better Than Bouillon, the vegetable version:
> 10 calories in 1T
> Total calories: 80
Question: why in the world would anyone recommend a so-called ‘diet’ recipe that includes 880 extra calories?
In addition, heated oil can oxidize and become quite toxic. It’s true that olive oil has a much higher oxidation point than most oils so I don’t know if this recipe is hot enough to bring about oxidation but I do know that it’s always better to eat unheated olive oil … as in pouring it on your salad.
The Moral To This Story: don’t take weight loss advice from ANYONE without doing your research first!
