Sniffling, sneezing allergy attacks are no fun for anyone so here are seven home remedies that may just help to calm – or even eliminate – your allergy, depending on its severity. At the very worst, it will help your allergy medicine to be more effective and allergy relief more effective.
1. Avoiding Allergens With a Better Filter
Most furnace filters are made of fiberglass or foam and they efficiently capture the large, heavy particles. But most of them don’t snag the tiny little flecks of pollen and other allergens that can trigger an allergy attack.
A better choice is a pleated filter, such as those made by Filtrete or BestAir. They cost a bit more but they’re usually only $10 max and they catch at least six times more pollen than fiberglass or foam ones according to the University of Illinois. Put one on your furnace today and it’ll mop up pollens in your home for at least four weeks before needing to be replaced.
2. Tame Allergy Inflammation With An Herb
An East Indian urban called guduchi or tinospora eases runny, itchy sinus symptoms and sneezing for 6 our of 10 allergy sufferers, reports the Journal of Ethnopharmacology. Taking a daily supplement that includes 600 mg – 1200 mg of this powerful herb will help clear your allergy triggered nose, throat and lung inflammation because it is loaded with polysaccharide compounds which combat inflammation. Reputable brands include Himalaya and AyurSante. DO NOT by some cheapo brand of tinospora.
3. Sweet Potatoes Cut Allergy Flareups by 56%
Sweet potatoes are orange because they contain keratinoids which stop the release of histamine, the culprit behind allergy symptoms. In a German study, eating one cup of carrot-rich foods daily cut the risk of seasonal allergy woes by 56%. The carrots enter into immune cells and make their membranes more stable so they’re less likely to release histamine.
4. Strengthen Your Immune System with Green or Red Tea
Choose either green tea or red rooibos tea daily to help yourself breathe better. The active ingredients in green tea help block your body’s production of immuno-globulin E, a compound that kick starts allergic reactions. Red rooibos contains anti-inflammatories that dampen production of histamine. Drink 2 cups daily for best results.
5. And While We’re on the Subject of Drinking …
Sipping eight glasses of water every day flushes out histamines, reducing congestion and other nasal symptoms in 4 out of 10 women. Does this also help men? That seems to be unknown at this time.
6. Quercetin Is a White Knight
Quercetin is a natural anti-inflammatory that is found in foods. Eight University of Maryland study claims that eating two servings of quercetin rich foods daily can significantly ease allergy symptoms in as little as one week! Here are some choices you can make:
* One apple, with the skin
* 1 cup berries, cherries, citrus or red and purple grapes
* 1/2 cup red onions
* One heaping cup of broccoli or leafy greens
If you don’t like any of these, take a natural supplement like the one above.
7. Under the Tongue Allergy Drops
Nobody wants to be stuck with needles but that has been the only answer, up until now, for people with severe allergies. However there is a new product that is a lot more pleasant to use: sub lingual immunotherapy (SLIT), under the tongue drops that work just like allergy shots, slowly desensitizing your immune system so that it doesn’t overreact to allergens.
For example, if you’re allergic to pollen, if you use these drops daily you will be able to breathe in 10 times more pollen before a single symptom occurs, according to research done at the University of North Carolina. You will need to ask your doctor if you’re a good candidate for these drops.
