Many people strive to live a healthy lifestyle, but in today’s chaotic world filled with unhealthy temptations, living the healthy lifestyle you want is not always easy. The key is to consistently make smarter choices. Making smart choices is something that even the healthiest people have to work on and do on a regular basis. Here are a few tips to help you make better decisions when it comes to eating better.
Create healthy side dishes
Some of the highest calories and least nutritious parts of a meal tend to be the side dish. Side dishes are usually the carbohydrates that, when not healthy, can fill a person up on sugars, refined or overly processed ingredients and high levels of starch.
To make a healthier choice in life, choose healthy side dishes. You will get just as full, but the nutrients you get from healthier choices, such as vegetables or fruits, will give your body a natural source of vitamins and leave you feeling more energetic. It will also help your waistline.
Choose healthier desserts
Living a healthy life does not mean living dessert free. Almost everyone loves to indulge every now and then in something sweet after a meal. The key to doing this well is to make a healthier choice.
Opt for desserts with the lowest amounts of sugar and processed ingredients. For example, choose yogurt over sorbet, or an apple dish over a cake. This way, you can satisfy your sweet tooth and indulge once in awhile without being too unhealthy.
Eat smaller portions
Over time, plates have grown in size allowing people to fill them with more food. The brain tells the stomach that the right amount of food is what fits on your plate. Therefore, when you eat on a bigger plate, you eat more than you would if you ate on a smaller sized plate.
Portion out your food so that you eat enough to feel full, but not overindulge. As a rule, each part of your meal should fit in the palm of your hand. Try not to make portion sizes bigger than this when you put them on your plate. This way, you can stick with healthier choices, still fuel your body with nutritious food, and not overindulge.
Making smarter choices when it comes to eating will help you feel and look your best. By focusing on the decisions you make on a regular basis, you will quickly fall into the habit of healthier living because of your smart choices. Work at this every day and you will soon feel happier and healthier.
