I don’t have any dogs, but my daughter has two of them and wanted to start feeding them healthier food. So she experimented with various recipes and found two that her spoiled canines really, really like. So I’m sharing those delicious (to dogs, anyway) recipes here for others who might be concerned about the additives in commercial dog food.
Dog Food With High Amounts of Calcium For Strong Bones
1 pound ground chicken or beef
4 cups cooked oatmeal or rice
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
1/4 cup oil
3 teaspoons bone meal
1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese
1 dog vitamin (optional)
Preparation
1: Cook the meat over a medium heat
2: Stir in the other ingredients and add enough water to make it the texture you want
This will store in the refrigerator for a week and in the freezer for three months.
Note: I have read that dairy is not good for dogs so I question whether the cheese is a good idea? But it definitely adds calcium and dog owners will know more about this subject than I do.
Yummy Dog Biscuits
2 pounds of the dog food above or 2 pounds of canned dog food
1/4 cup whole wheat flour
3/4 cup oat bran
1 cup oatmeal
1/4 cup grated cheddar or parmesan (optional)
1 dog vitamin (optional)
Preparation
1: Preheat your oven to 250 degrees
2. Mix the dry ingredients
3. Slowly add the oil until it reaches a consistency that can be cut with a cookie cutter
4. Either roll and cut the biscuits or shape them by hand
5. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 3 1/2 hours or until hard
6. Cool and store in a covered canister in the refrigerator for a week or up to one month in the freezer
My daughter doesn’t remember where she found these two recipes so I apologize for not giving credit where it is due. What’s most important is that her dogs scarfed down these two delicious dog food treats as though they were being starved. One of them is finicky so her enthusiasm is impressive.
