One way to prevent the most common mental health issue is to know the reasons why people get depressed. No one wants to be depressed. It is a horrible way to live and can lead to suicide, relationship problems, job issues as well as illnesses which can lead to early death.
1. Loss of A Loved One
It doesn't matter if you've lost your loved one due to death, illness, divorce, moving or estrangement you experience grief. The fourth stage of grief is depression. When you move through the five stages of grief in a healthy manner, you don't get stuck in any one stage. The problem occurs when you refuse to let go and adjust to life without your loved one. This can result in emotional complications as well as isolation from those who love and care for you.
2. Losing Your Job
Other than the death of a loved one, there is nothing as devastating as losing your job. Even if you didn't like your job it represented security. You knew money was available for food, shelter and clothing. Men seem to have a more difficult time when fired or laid off. Their self-image is tied much more to their job than is the case for most women.
3. Engaging in Addictive Behaviors
The emotional component of addiction involves attempting to fill the emptiness within through a substance or action. The emptiness has nothing to do with the substance or action used to permanently keep away the painful feelings. The addict soon moves into a cycle of attempting to fill the emotional hole, temporarily feeling better, experiencing shame and guilt and then using the substance or action to feel better. Hopelessness can result quickly.
4. Being Isolated
Humans are pack animals. We like being with others. That is why there is the emotional drive to have a significant other and form a family. If the choice is not a family, then friends, work and other social groups give the sense of belonging which is needed. When someone feels they don't belong, they feel isolated even if there are people around them. This is one of the major reasons why people get depressed.
5. Medications
Most people are not aware that certain medications have depression as a side effect. Some of the common ones are Accutane, statins, oral contraceptives, blood pressure medication, steroids as well as anti-depressants. If you're taking medication and begin to feel sadness, despair or discouragement check the side effects of the drug and call your doctor.
Summary
Knowing the reasons why people get depressed can assist you in being proactive to avoid it or resolve it before the problem is severe. There is much you can do for yourself if you only have the information.
