When I was a kid I suffered terribly from motion sickness. This lasted through my 30s and it was terrible sometimes – I had to take Dramamine to ride the bus to my college classes! There are many activities that can cause motion sickness: traveling by car, plane or boat; riding a roller coaster, bungee jumping, parachuting and many, many more. But whatever we do, the cause of motion sickness is the same: conflicting messages from your senses. Motion sickness usually happens when one sense tells us that we’re staying in one place and another sense claims that we are moving. For example when we’re in a ship’s cabin, our eyes don’t see any movement, but our inner ear does. Such conflict of messages is the main cause of motion sickness.
Symptoms Of Motion Sickness
The symptoms can be easily noticed, but in many cases they can be misinterpreted. When we generally don’t feel well, we have a headache and we feel nauseated (and may even throw up) and this happens on a plane or on a boat – it is obvious that this is caused by motion sickness. But when we have the same symptoms in a car, we often think that we just have some stomach problems. We often forget that not only airplanes and boats can cause motion sickness – all kinds of traveling can make us sick. I ought to know – I threw up multiple times on my first long car trip – until my parents stopped at a drugstore and bought some Dramamine. We never went on a car trip again without it. :-)
What To Do In Case Of Motion Sickness?
Unless we're willing to take motion sickness medicine, there is little we can do. Usually looking out of the window helps a little – it reduces the conflicts between the senses that cause motion sickness. Vomiting is often also a good solution (it helps only for a short time, but it definitely helps) as well as avoiding any rapid movements.
Is There Any Permanent Cure For Motion Sickness
There are some medicines that are known to reduce the effects of motion sickness, and some of them really work. And often people outgrow motion sickness, as I did. But the only 100% sure way to cure it is eliminating the things that cause motion sickness. In other words: you want to avoid motion sickness? Stay at home and if you really have to travel, make sure you have some pills to suppress its side effects.
