Vacation workouts don't have to be dreaded commitments you have to squeeze in between fun activities. Stay active by exploring the local terrain on foot or bike in hidden beach spots, the boardwalk or trendy beach towns. With a little research about your forthcoming exotic beach vacation, you can pack the appropriate gear and have an adventurous, active beach getaway.
What do you love to do or dream of trying? Imagine surf lessons, snorkeling and scuba diving adventures, kayak journeys, sandy jogs, wilderness hikes or meditations with breezes of salty sea air. Rather than downing those Coronas while basking in the sun, embark on an explorative and active beach trip.
* Wake up and greet the dawn with sun salutation and a series of yoga poses right on your hotel patio. As the sun rises and day warms, engage in vinyasa yoga postures, such as sun breath and mountain pose. Create your own flow ahead of time or download a yoga app to follow on your tablet. Also, pack portable resistance bands for strength training and toning while enjoying the beautiful, panoramic views of surfers and sailboats right from your patio.
* To increase that cardio, lace up those Brooks and run. Run to local festivals or farmer's markets. Chat with locals and check out the goods. According to the article "Healthy Eating on Vacation" on the HCCMIS insurance claims travel blog, apples, pears, plums and other fruits are a great substitute for candy if you are having a sweet craving. Collect a small bunch of organic fruits for your run back and nosh on one as a post-run snack to refuel.
Plan your sightseeing itinerary and look for unique ways to uncover beautiful natural sites and local landmarks. Bike on beach cruisers to a beach-side seafood restaurant. Explore the shore while pedaling on the surface of the water on hydrobikes. Soak in the beach vistas while paddling on an ocean kayak or paddle board.
For an intense beach workout, get dirty with the sand. Sand provides greater resistance than a smooth surface. The more difficult to run on, the better workout. Sand also absorbs impact, so your joints will thank you. Keep in mind the sand is an uneven surface. Prevent twisting your ankle by wearing shoes and running on sand nearer the shore that is wet and firm.
You can also create your own mini circuit exercise program on the beach. Set up an area with visual markers, such as your towel, water bottles, sunscreen bottles and the lifeguard tower. Switch among walking lunges, sprinting and light jogging, leg squats, pushups, jumping jacks, burpees, leg lifts and planks.
A night out on the town can also work up a sweat. Dancing can burn up to 200 calories in 30 minutes, whether you're making it hot and steamy at a club or cutting a rug at a local dive bar. By taking on the dance floor, you can indulge in those long island iced teas or strawberry daiquiris guilt-free.
