Natural skin care for a baby is easy to do. Most of the time all it takes is common sense and thinking. A newborn baby’s skin is very sensitive. Skin is actually the largest organ that a baby has. A newborn has been in the mother’s womb and will need to get used to the new, outside environment. The womb acted like a protective cocoon and kept the baby’s skin away from everything. It is a very lucky thing for the newborn and their mother that the baby’s skin is highly adaptable. The baby’s skin will have some skin conditions that are common that it will have to overcome. Some of these skin conditions that babies have are sunburn, heat rash, cradle crap, and baby acne. These skin conditions can be prevented and even treated with normal baths on a regular basis. These baths should have skin care products for your baby that is organic and natural.
Your newborn’s skin will lose moisture quickly. You will not want to give your baby a bath every day. In the beginning of your child’s life, you should give your baby baths less frequently. Every other day is the soonest you should give them a bath. This will give their sensitive skin time to soak up just the right amount of moisture.
Your baby’s umbilical cord will look weird to you. It will most likely fall off after a week or two. However, it is not uncommon for it to fall off after the first week. You will need to clean the umbilical cord/belly button area with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol. You can also use alcohol prep pads instead of the cotton swab and rubbing alcohol. The alcohol prep pads are a good thing to keep in your diaper bag for cleaning on the go. The alcohol will help prevent your baby from getting an infection due to dirty diapers.
Cradle crap can be cleaned with a soft brush. Afterwards, you should put a natural moisturizer on the area to help keep the cradle crap away. You will want to avoid baby powder. The baby powder is designed to absorb moisture and it will absorb it from your baby’s skin.
Baby acne can be seen as soon as right after the baby is born. Normally it does not show up until the second day or 24 hours. Some babies will get rid of their acne faster than others. Other babies will have the acne for a couple months. Baby acne is common and goes away by its self. You will not need to do anything for the acne unless it gets infected.
Babies can easily get a heat rash. You should treat a heat rash with a cool bath. You should also dress your baby in clothes that are made of a breathable fabric. You may consider using Egyptian cotton that is organic for your baby’s clothing. Do not overdress your baby when it is hot outside. This will only make the heat rash worse.
To keep your baby from getting sunburned, you should not put your baby in the direct sunlight for long periods of time. You will need to dress them appropriately and use baby things that have adequate shade. You can even buy window shades for the car for your baby.
