5 Ways to Make Ends Meet as a Sole Breadwinner

Written by Sydney Johnston Leave a Comment

It is devastating to see the people you love and care about in pain. But what hurts more, is when you realize that the illness is long-term and they are not leaving their sickbed any time soon. When this happens to your spouse, you are left with many responsibilities to take care of on your own. First, you need to acknowledge the sickness and accept to take care of your injured loved one. You also need to realize that from that time henceforth you are the sole breadwinner and your family entirely relies on you financially. So how do you make ends meet?

Short-term loans

Most people would agree with the notion that life is better without debt. However, sometimes things happen in life which make it so that debt is unavoidable. If your spouse is unable to work due to an injury or ongoing illness, utilizing short-term borrowing through reliable lenders is an option to consider. This enables households to receive funds as soon as the next business day. With money tight due to being down to one income, these loans can prove to be an especially handy resource to have on deck as a backup.

Seek legal redress

If your injured loved one was involved in a car accident you need to seek the help of a personal injury attorney to pursue compensation. A competent attorney could help you get compensatory damages which will cover the costs associated with the injury. These may include lost wages, inability to perform essential household chores, cost of their medical bills and other expenses.

Get another job

During this time, you cannot afford to have too much sleep or leisure time. You need that extra coin to avoid getting into a financial crisis. Working part-time hours to make more money is a good idea. You can also evaluate your schedule and make time for another job. Identify the kind of job you can do during your free time and make applications.

Ask for help

It is during difficult times that you get to learn who your true friends are. A true friend will hold your hand and walk the journey with you. Talk to your extended family and close friends about the illness and request for their financial support to cater for the bill. Alternatively, you can conduct fundraising and invite your friends and workmates to make contributions towards the medical bill. Use the extra money collected to meet your other essential needs.

Cut your bills

You can lower your heating and cooling bills by weather-stripping. You can also cut energy cost by installing a programmed thermostat that can be turned off when you are not in the house and on when you get back instead of having it on all day even when you are out of the house. Also, start using energy efficient bulbs that use lesser power and last longer than ordinary bulbs. Also, be conscious of gas costs; drive at lower speeds and pump up your tires to consume less fuel.

Finding out that your spouse is seriously sick or injured can be overwhelming. However, you need to stop worrying and instead let the ill person know that there is hope. Keep in mind that life has to move on and you have to cater for bills. Be optimistic and believe that you can do it.
