3 Problems With Traditional Affirmations
Here are the three main problems with affirmations, the reasons that you might have tried them in the past – without results.
#1: Too many folks have believed they’re akin to Harry Potter’s magic wand. Say a few words, sprinkle some magic dust and instantly we have bodies that would adorn the front covers of fashion magazines. Affirmations aren’t magic spells – they’re tools.
#2: Using affirmations seems like a lie. When someone says, “I weigh 125 pounds” and the scale says 200, then we immediately feel like a liar, resulting in disbelief and guilt.
Here is what my favorite teacher, Dr. Silvia Hartmann, has to say about affirmations.
When a normal, uninitiated person comes across affirmations, the first thing they ALWAYS say, sometimes cry out angrily, is this:
“BUT THAT’S NOT TRUE!”
So we are poor, and we make an affirmation of, “I am surrounded by the treasures of my wealth!” and THAT isn’t here or now, and so it looks like a lie – “It’s not true!” “I’m in a trailer on a caravan park and the only thing I’m surrounded by is bills I can’t pay and some empty beer cans! Affirmations are STUPID LIES THAT MAKE EVERYTHING WORSE!!!”
And that moment is the end of it.
There is a major misunderstanding that has happened, when this happens – affirmations are NOT DESCRIPTIONS OF THE CURRENT SITUATION.
Affirmations are goals, achieved – they are what we WANT instead of what we already have.
#3: We’re all in too much of a hurry. I know, I know. We want to be thin N.O.W. But the reality is that it takes as long as it takes. That’s the kind of statement that annoys most people – including me – but it’s the truth nonetheless. So trying weight loss affirmations over the weekend and then giving up because ‘nothing happened’ truly makes no sense at all.
